The Ontario Access Coalition is pleased to announce a major success in preserving climbing access in Ontario – the replacement of aging fixed hardware at Old Baldy.

This milestone project has been made possible through the generous donation of new fixed hardware from Mountain Equipment Co-Op (MEC). In turn, the OAC has donated the hardware to a team of local volunteers, led by experienced bolters, who have already begun work on the project.

Grey Sauble Conservation Authority (GSCA) who manages the cliff has formally recognized the partnership with the OAC. Chris Hachey, the Land Management Coordinator for GSCA comments that the project is “to improve climbing access at Old Baldy Conservation area“. The GSCA officially kicked off the project on Friday, September 17, 2010 facilitating “volunteers from the climbing community to replace some of the aging bolts along the climbing routes. This ongoing project is being carried out to assist with improving safety along the climbing routes at Old Baldy. We look forward to working with the OAC and volunteers from the climbing community on this important project“.

The Grey County tourism website www.visitgrey.ca is promoting rock climbing in Grey County on their site. Click READ MORE to learn why this is important.

Specifically mentioning Old Baldy and Metcalf Rock crags the site promotes local guiding services and of course the OAC. Check it out for yourself at http://www.visitgrey.ca/travel-experiences/outdoor-adventure/rock-climbing.

Having climbing promoted by third parties such as toursim organizations is a step in the right direction for helping to change perceptions of climbing and to help build revenue for the local area. Support of local businesses, tourism associations, and Chambers of Commerce can be very helpful when working with Land Manager’s to discuss the value that climbers bring and in the end can help climbers gain access to crags.

In an effort to keep you up to date on Ontario Access information here’s the latest update for some popular crags spots on the Bruce Peninsula. If you know something we don’t please send us an email so we can share.

Lions Head

Cottagers at the end of road are approaching people who park there and asking them to park at the Bruce Trail lot. The OAC will be investigating the land ownership and will provide an update once we have reliable information to base it on. In the meanwhile, be courteous and if you are approached, be respectful of the cottagers’ wishes.

White Bluff

The parking situtaion at White’s Bluff remains unchanged. Climbers should park at the designated parking lot on Forty Hills Road and walk to the end of Whipporwill and cut along the beach by the fence at the last cottage. Do not park anywhere on the Forty Hills road itself (ie, use the parking lot). Keep the your approach low profile and be courteous to the cottagers. Treat all bolts at the B-Movie wall as suspect.

Halfway Log Dump

The Opening Day on the May long weekend and the Park Staff training in early June were both success stories. Thanks to those of you that came out to support these events. The new “Site Host’ Program gives boulderers the opportunity to take stewardship to the next level and is being warmly welcomed by the park. For those interested in helping there are still a few weekends available for volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering to be a site host at HWLD email us at webmaster@ontarioaccesscoalition.com. Be sure to download your free guide at www.OntarioAccessCoalition.com and support the OAC by becoming a member today (Details at the top right side of the OAC website).

Lots of new problems have been established while many old and new projects are being sent. While the weather forecast continues to show rain, the actual weather at HWLD has been sunny weekend after weekend. Water levels are low this year, which means that more lines are accessible than usual. Contractor bags can help keep your pad out of any puddles. There have been sightings of both Bears and Rattlesnakes so watch for wildlife. If you are already, or plan to become a regular visitor, a seasons pass for parking can be bought at the park offices at the main BPNP visitor’s center in Tobermory for $49.00. Stay tuned for an updated guide later this season which features some corrections and many additional new

The OAC is very pleased to announce that as of May 22, 2010, bouldering is permitted on designated boulders at Halfway Log Dump (HWLD) in Bruce Peninsula National Park. The re-opening of HWLD to bouldering is the result of a “Recreational Activity Assessment Process”, completed in partnership by Parks Canada and the Ontario Access Coalition. This opening is a great opportunity for the Ontario Bouldering community to enjoy the area while acting as a steward for the Park. See Official BPNP bulletin here. Bouldering at HWLD was closed spring of 2003, to protect the natural resources of the park from inappropriate development of boulder problems. Boulderers interested in climbing here should continue reading below.

Opening day will kickoff at Noon on May 22nd (weather permitting), at the Crab boulder with a brief orientation session by the OAC and Bruce Peninsula National Parks staff. Boulderers should familiarize themselves with the guidelines created from the ‘Recreational Activity Assessment Process’ and actively promote the guidelines to other boulderers. Additionally, Boulderers need to be keenly aware of an endangered yellow flower called the Lakeside Daisy that grows on the first three large boulders on the shoreline (closed to climbing). A thorough monitoring program has been put in place to support the guidelines and protect the natural features of HWLD.

What are the Guidelines?

Bouldering will be permitted at HWLD on specific boulders on the shoreline at the area, while bouldering will not be permitted on boulders located within the forest or on the Lakeside Daisy Boulders.

Aspire to boulder without leaving a trace at Halfway Log Dump. Remove chalk after climbing, pack out trash, and pick up litter. There is a composting toilet at the parking lot for use at Halfway Log Dump.

Maintain a low profile when bouldering at Halfway Log Dump. By maintaining a low profile we help to preserve the quality of experience for other visitors.

Climb only on the boulders on the flat rock beach area between the Crab boulder and Cave Point. There are hundreds of boulders in this area. Do not boulder in the forest or on the Lakeside Daisy boulders. Use existing trails to help protect natural features.

Be aware of key plant species to be protected in Halfway Log Dump. Plant species can be easily overlooked. Do not trample or pick vegetation.

Understand and respect historical ethics and restrictions Halfway Log Dump. Stay on the beach, brush off chalk, keep your gear tidy, and be friendly!

Follow all of the rules of the Park. Educate others and report violations to the Park. Be a steward.
Boulder safely at Halfway Log Dump. Boulder within your comfort zone and be an attentive spotter. Provide assistance and guidance to other visitors, as needed.

Develop new Boulder problems responsibly. Violating this rule led to closure of bouldering at Halfway Log Dump in the past. If in doubt, leave it alone.

Where can I get the Beta?

There is a free downloadable guide to the area. This guide can be printed double-sided and stapled in the middle to create a nice little booklet that fits in the top of your pack. You will need somewhere to stay ahead of time so make sure to check out the ‘Accommodations’ section of the guide before heading up. The official park brochure supporting bouldering is available here.

How can I help?

The OAC is looking for boulderers to promote the guidelines above to other boulderers and act as ambassadors for our sport and the area. While the OAC tries to reach out to as many boulderers as possible,we can’t reach everyone and we are looking for volunteers to act as site hosts on weekends. Quite simply, Site Hosts will help ensure the activity runs smoothly. The park has offered to waive the $11.70 parking fee for the cars of these individuals. If you are interested in acting as a “Volunteer Site Host” for weekend this summer please drop us a line at webmaster@ontarioaccesscoalition.com and pick your weekend.

Thank you very much to all of the OAC members, Sponsors, Partners, and volunteers for there help and encouragement in regaining access to HWLD.
